Till now how you have been keeping track of the our favourite news sites and blogs is by visiting them using a bookmark, which is essentially a placeholder of the URL of your favourite sites, everytime you want to see what’s the latest news and updates, you go and click on the bookmark which takes you to the marked website.
This is now considered “Old Method” or “Unsmart way“. So what is the “New Method” or “Smart way“?
Here’s where RSS come in.
What is RSS ?
RSS stands for ”Really Simple Syndication” but is popularly known as ”Rich Site Summary”, it brings in a whole new dimension to the way you will browse the internet. It lets you view all the NEW updates from your favortite news and blog sites at one place. Basically it works the opposite way how you have been acccessing information on the internet till now. Till now you have been going to your favourite sites and seeing if there is any updates on them, but what RSS does is, it brings the updates and informatoin to you instead of you having to go and find them.
By bringing the information to you instead to you having to find it out, it saves you time and provides the most recent information as and when it is published.
How do we use RSS?
To use an RSS feed what you will need is a “Feed Reader” or “News Aggregator”, these can be either web based or desktop based. But some of the most popular ones are the web based ones which are free as well. Here are a couple web based ones Google Reader, MyYahoo and Bloglines, I personally use the Google Reader, maybe because I also use a lot of other Google products as well. If you click on the links mentioned above you will find the instructions on how to set up you RSS feed is very well documented in them and its very easy to set up. Once you have decided which reader you will be using you just need to Add Subscriptions from you favourite sites and set it up once and you will be done. To find a subscription link on a site you would not need to search too much as you just need to find a similar icon on the list below and click on it
